Summary:

The poem is about a blind boy who shares his experience of living without sight. He doesn’t understand what light means and cannot tell day from night. However, he can feel the warmth of the sun and enjoys his own world. Even without vision, he stays happy, sings, and feels like a king, showing courage, joy and a positive attitude toward life.

Whom do you think the blind boy is speaking to?
Answer: The blind boy is speaking to a sighted person or people around him who do not understand what it's like to live without vision. Through his words, he shares his unique experience of the world, hoping others will appreciate his perspective and the way he finds joy despite his blindness.

Answer the following question in complete sentences:

(a) What would happen if the blind boy kept awake?
Answer: If the blind boy kept awake, he would remain in darkness, as he cannot perceive light even during the day. For him, there is no difference between night and day.

(b) What does the blind boy bear with patience?
Answer: The blind boy bears his condition of blindness with patience, accepting the limitations it brings without complaint.

(c) Why does the blind boy think that he is a king?
Answer: The blind boy thinks that he is a king because he creates his own world of imagination. In his mind, he controls his surroundings, finding joy and peace despite his inability to see.

(d) Quote any two lines from the poem that suggest that the boy has a positive attitude towards life.
Answer:
“So much of joy I never knew,”
“Whilst thus I sing, I am a king.”

These lines reflect his ability to experience happiness and empowerment through his imagination and resilience.

Complete the following imaginary dialogue between Day and Night. The beginning of the dialogue is given for you:

Day: Dear friend, I must declare I am more important than you.
Night: I don’t know how you can say that.
Day: The sun rises during the day. People work and the children go to school.
Night: Everyone takes rest and regains energy to start fresh.
Day: You bring darkness, I bring light and warmth.
Night: I have the light of the moon. I make the surroundings cool, you can be harsh sometimes.
Day: Indeed, that’s true. We can then say both of us are equally important.
Night: Yes, Mankind needs both work and rest to live a balanced life.


Activity – 8 (C)

Develop a story within sixty words based on the following hints. Add a suitable title to it:

An old lady loses vision_ calls in a doctor – agrees to pay a large fee if cured – doctor removes some of her furniture daily – lady is cured – she refuses to pay – says she cannot see any of her furniture.

“The Clever Lady”

An old lady lost her sight. She promised to pay a big fee if the doctor cured her. Each day, the doctor took away her furniture secretly. When her sight returned, she said she couldn’t see any of her furniture. So, she refused to pay. The clever lady taught the greedy doctor a lesson!
